In Visayas, a Groom Abandons His Bride After Their Reception
VISAYAS – A newlywed couple had a messy end to their wedding day after the groom decided to leave the bride following their reception.
According to the groom, the bride refused to accompany him, citing her reluctance to leave her mother alone. Conversely, the bride claimed that the groom abruptly disappeared after their wedding reception.
The incident was reported by the regional radio station RPN DYKC Cebu via Facebook on February 26, 2024, where the groom was defended by a relative who criticized the rushed wedding and excessive demands made.
The relative said, “Dzai, hindi ka nag-asawa kung takot kang iuwi ng lalaki. Awang-awa ako sa pamangkin ko, pamamanhikan pa lang, malaki na ang nagastos. Plus, yung pagpapakasal niyo ura-urada. Ang laki pa ng hinihingi niyo, di niyo man lang naisip… sa pagod, at layo.”
The relative is referring to the dowry tradition. The latter also highlighted the family’s effort to travel from Pamplona, Negros Oriental, to Bairan, Naga, where the bride’s family resides.
The relative ridiculed the bride’s mother for preventing her from leaving with her husband, suggesting the mother might have wanted to accompany the couple herself. This relative expressed disappointment in the mother’s actions, emphasizing embarrassment for the family due to the situation.
Meanwhile, the bride responded, expressing her intention to accompany her husband but explaining that she wanted to attend to their wedding guests first, which led to the groom leaving without her. “Ako, bilang asawa niya, sasama ako. Nakikiusap ako na asikasuhin muna ang mga bisita at ang iba pa naming kamag-anak. Pagkatapos kumain, sasama ako pauwi. Ngunit, nag-alala talaga ako dahil iniwan na niya ako, hindi man lang nagpaalam sa akin,” the bride said. “Grabe ang iyak ko, hinanap siya ng mga kamag-anak ko, ngunit wala na siya, umalis na. Hindi man lang nagpaalam, grabe ang iyak ko dahil wala na siya,” she added.
Netizens observed a lack of communication between the newlyweds, with some attributing the issue to miscommunication or pride. The incident went viral, highlighting the couple’s unpreparedness for married life and leaving their future uncertain.
