Daddy Yankee announces his retirement to dedicate his life to Christianity
DADDY YANKEE – The “Despacito” and “Gasolina” singer has officially announced his retirement from the reggaeton scene to dedicate his life to his religious beliefs. The rapper made this declaration following the conclusion of his farewell tour, La Meta (The Goal), on Sunday night in his homeland of Puerto Rico.
The 46-year-old singer expressed his decision through a heartfelt speech delivered after an electrifying performance of his global hit “Gasolina,” a track that played a pivotal role in the globalization of reggaeton and catapulted him to mainstream success in 2004,
The artist, who is also known for popularizing the 2017 megahit “Despacito” alongside Luis Fonsi said: “My people, this day for me is the most important day of my life. And I want to share it with you because living a life of success is not the same as living a life with purpose.”
Despite experiencing global acclaim, winning awards, and earning praise from fans worldwide, Daddy Yankee revealed that a part of him felt unfulfilled for a prolonged period. Standing before an audience of over 18,000 at the Coliseo de Puerto Rico, he confessed, “I have to confess that those days are over. Someone was able to fill that emptiness.” While donning stylish sunglasses onstage, the tears streaming down his face were evident to the thousands of fans watching him via livestream worldwide.
Quoting a Bible verse in Spanish, Daddy Yankee said, “What good will it be for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul?” He continued, “That is why tonight, I recognize, and I am not ashamed to tell the whole world that Jesus lives in me and that I will live for him,” raising his hand to the sky. Daddy Yankee revealed that he would embark on “a new beginning” using his birth name, Ramón Ayala.
