Vietnamese woman lives on water and soft drinks
BUI THI LOI – A 75-year-old Vietnamese woman claimed that she has been living on water and soft drinks for the past 50 years.
Bui recounted as per an article published on Oddity Central on November 29, 2023, a peculiar incident in 1963 that she believes is related to her unique diet. While helping treat wounded soldiers in the mountains during the US-Vietnam War, she was accidentally struck by lightning and lost consciousness.
Upon regaining consciousness, she didn’t eat for several days, and her friends gave her sugar water to prevent her from weakening. Since then, she lost interest in eating solid food and reluctantly consumes fruits when pressured by family and friends.
By 1970, Bui had stopped eating anything solid and relied solely on water and soft drinks. Her refrigerator is always stocked with bottles of water and sweetened beverages. When she got married and had children, she faced difficulties breastfeeding and had to seek help from other mothers. Bui mentioned that she feels dizzy when she smells food, and she refrains from tasting the dishes her children prepare. She also stopped cooking when her children had their own families.
While doctors emphasize the importance of a balanced diet for a healthy body, Bui insists that her unique diet is sufficient to keep her healthy and strong. Doctors from the Department of Nutrition at the Vietnam-Cuba Friendship Hospital in Dong Hoi acknowledge that sweetened soft drinks can quickly replenish the body’s energy and support digestive system function. However, they also emphasize the health risks associated with soft drinks, including obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and cardiovascular diseases.
Bui’s case went viral, but her condition has not been scientifically verified, as she claims not to have fallen ill or been hospitalized. There is no explanation regarding the potential connection between the lightning strike and her diet. Nonetheless, those who know her affirm that she has indeed been sustaining herself on soft drinks and water since the lightning incident.
