A Reddit Award is an award that Redditors (also known as Reddit users) give to each other as a way to recognize and to react to each other’s contributions on the platform.
Comments or posts that have been awarded with various Reddit Awards are often highlighted on the platform. Also, the recipient of an award will get special perks such as Reddit Coins or a few days of ad-free browsing and access to the exclusive r/lounge subreddit.
Here are the different types of awards:
- Reactions. Reaction awards are ways to react to posts or comments on the platform.
- Community. Moderators of a subreddit can create custom awards made especially for their communities. A percentage of the Reddit Coins goes to the community bank whenever a Redditor buys community awards with Reddit Coins and moderators can use those coins to give out moderator-exclusive awards.
- Medals. There are 5 medal awards that you can give to a Redditor — Silver, Gold, Platinum, Argentium, and Ternion All-Powerful — and these awards increase in cost and ridiculousness.
- Premium. Premium awards are only available to members of Reddit Premium as they tend to be shinier and more flashy than other Reddit Awards.
How to give an award to a Redditor?
- If you liked someone’s post and want to give an award, the first thing to do is to click or tap the gift icon underneath the content you would like to give an award. From there, you can choose the award you want to give and then you need to follow the step-by-step directions in order to buy the award using Reddit Coins.
- If you want to give an award to a post from your feed, you need to tap the three-dot icon on the top right corner of the post and then select “Award”.
- If you want to give an award to a comment, you need to tap the three-dot icon under the comment and select “Award”.
The changes in Awards and Coins
It was last July when the company announced that they’re reworking on how content and contributions are rewarded on the platform. According to the company, they decided to sunset awards and coins.
Reddit also announced that Redditors will no longer be able to buy new coins but all existing coins and awards will continue to be available until September 12, 2023.
