Bayani Fernando dies
BAYANI FERNANDO – The former Marikina City mayor and former MMDA chairman has passed away at the age of 77.
Through social media posts, many barangays in Marikina expressed their sadness at his untimely death. Fernando also served as the representative for Marikina’s 1st congressional district from 2016 to 2022. He was the son of the late Marikina Mayor Gil Fernando, who was the third mayor of the city. Bayani followed in his father’s footsteps, serving as Marikina City mayor from 1992 to 2001. He was born on July 25, 1946.
Fernando, a professional Mechanical Engineer, founded the BF Group of Companies, which encompasses construction, steel, manufacturing, and real estate. He was responsible for constructing the country’s tallest buildings, shopping malls, industrial and residential subdivisions, and various facilities. Fernando also held the position of Secretary of the Department of Public Works and Highways during former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s term.
During his three-term tenure as City Mayor of Marikina, Fernando transformed the municipality into one of the best-managed cities, setting an example of responsive and effective governance. Under his leadership, Marikina City received 55 citations and distinctions.
Metropolitan Manila underwent significant positive changes when he served as the chairman of the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) from 2002 to 2009. Known for his strict discipline, his efforts against vendors and road obstructions initially faced resistance but ultimately led to the clearing of sidewalks and pathways.
In recognition of his outstanding work, Fernando received several honors, including the Doctor of Humanities, Honoris Causa, from Ateneo de Cagayan, The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Award for Government Service, the H.R Reyes Academic Medallion of Honor from Central Colleges of the Philippines, and a Doctor of Public Administration, Honoris Causa, from the Polytechnic University of the Philippines.
