Palawan declares Pura Luka Vega persona non grata
PURA LUKA VEGA – The controversial drag artist has been declared “persona non grata” in the province of Palawan.
On Tuesday, August 29, 2023, the provincial board of Palawan adopted a resolution declaring Vega as “persona non grata.” The resolution, primarily authored by Board Member Winston Arzaga, was approved during the regular session of the provincial board.
As per Arzaga’s resolution, Vega’s recent performance, in which she dressed as the Black Nazarene and rapped a version of The Lord’s Prayer (Ama Namin), “reduced the sacred prayer of Christian faith into a despicable mockery, and has utterly disregarded the religious sensibilities, beliefs and faith of the vast Catholic and Christian population of Palawan.”
Arzaga also clarified that declaring someone as persona non grata doesn’t restrict their travel between different places. Instead, it signifies that the individual is unwelcome and unwanted within the designated locality.
Palawan’s declaration of Pura Luka Vega as persona non grata makes it the 16th local government to do so. This move comes shortly after Palawan’s commemoration of its 400th year of Christianity, underscoring the deep-rooted Christian faith among its residents.
Meanwhile, apart from Palawan, Pura Luka Vega has been declared “unwelcome” in the following local government units: Floridablanca in Pampanga, General Santos City, Toboso in Negros Occidental, Bukidnon, Manila City, Nueva Ecija, Cagayan de Oro, Laguna, Cebu City, Dinagat Islands, Occidental Mindoro, Lucena City in Quezon Province, Mandaue City in Cebu, Bohol, and Batangas City.
Pura Luka Vega has already addressed the persona non grata declarations issued against him by stating: “Tell me EXACTLY what I did wrong. I’m open for a dialogue and yet cities have been declaring persona non grata without even knowing me or understanding the intent of the performance. Drag is art. You judge me yet you don’t even know me.”
