A dolphin passes away in Cebu a day after rescue
CEBU – The dolphin discovered in the shallow waters of Daanbantayan town in the northern part of the province has passed away.
The dolphin was initially spotted on a Thursday afternoon and was found dead on the following Friday morning, August 25th. The creature’s demise was confirmed by Danica Arcayna, who oversees biodiversity matters at the town’s Municipal Environment and Natural Resources Office (MENRO).
Efforts were made to guide the dolphin back to deeper waters according to Maya Barangay Captain Ellain Conje. However, the dolphin repeatedly returned to the shoreline instead of heading out to sea. Eventually, the dolphin’s lifeless body was found by a Bantay Dagat staff member in the coastal area of Sitio Sunflower. The incident was promptly reported to the MENRO.
The dolphin’s body bore several wounds, including a significant wound on its tail, as well as wounds on its pectoral fin and genital area. It was concluded from the investigation that these wounds were likely inflicted by a predator. The dolphin’s right eye was also reported to be blind.
Based on the report of CDN Digital, the dolphin measured approximately 167 centimeters in length and 72 centimeters in diameter. Arcayna mentioned that when residents initially spotted the weakened creature, it was evident that it was not in good health. There’s a possibility that the dolphin came from the Monad Shoal on Malapascua Island and got separated from its pod, according to Arcayna.
Meanwhile, dolphins are cetaceans with small teeth and distinctive curved mouth that forms a constant “smile.” There are 36 different species of dolphins and they are found in every ocean of the world. The majority of dolphins are marine creatures and inhabit either the open ocean or brackish waters along coastlines.
