Several factors play a significant role in shaping a country’s identity, and one of these factors is the predominant language used by its people. In the Philippines, the designated national language is Filipino, which is often used interchangeably with Tagalog, although they are distinct from each other.

During the 1930s, Tagalog was initially established as the official language of the Philippines. It served as the primary language among residents of Manila, the country’s capital. Originally written in the Baybayin script, it has since transitioned to the Latin alphabet.

In 1987, Filipino was officially recognized as the national language of the Philippines after concerns arose about certain Tagalog words being deemed “aesthetically unpleasing,” as stated by Your Dictionary. Additionally, the Cebuanos, residents of Cebu, disagreed with Tagalog being imposed as the national language, leading to the emergence of Filipino as an alternative version.

Despite Filipino being designated as the national language, the country remains home to a multitude of languages and dialects spoken by its people. The Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) acknowledges this diversity, which prompted them to formulate a theme for the 2023 Buwan ng Wika celebration that underscores the linguistic variety within the nation.

The theme for Language Month, or Buwan ng Wika 2023, is as follows:

“Filipino at mga Katutubong Wika: Wika ng Kapayapaan, Seguridad, at Ingklusibong Pagpapatupad ng Katarungang Panlipunan”

According to data from the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), the KWF has identified a total of 134 languages in the country, including Filipino Sign Language (FSL). The PIA emphasizes that these languages serve as conduits that foster peace, security and a more equitable social justice framework in the country.

Attorney Marites Barrios-Taran, the director-general of KWF, underscores the importance of recognizing the diverse languages present in the Philippines for the purpose of unifying Filipinos and building a peaceful, secure, and inclusive society.

The Director-General further highlights that all facets of the nation should contribute to advancing the well-being of every Filipino, as per the article. As part of the Language Month activities in the Philippines, various events are expected, including a webinar series, a book fair, and recognition for individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to the promotion of the Filipino language.
