After earning backlash over “Ama Namin” remix, Pura Luka Vega has apologized
PURA LUKA VEGA – The drag queen who gained attention for the viral “Ama Namin” video, issued an apology to those who felt uncomfortable with the performance.
The drag queen made headlines due to a video of him dressed as Jesus Christ while performing a remix version of “Ama Namin,” the Filipino version of the Lord’s Prayer. This sparked criticism from the public, including senators who deemed it blasphemous, offensive, and disrespectful. Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri even mentioned the possibility of criminal charges under Article 201 of the Revised Penal Code.
Vega described dressing up as Jesus Christ as a form of “art therapy” and drew parallels with how some Catholics dress up as Jesus Christ for penitential acts during Holy Week. Despite facing backlash, Vega expressed the intention to continue impersonating Jesus Christ as a way to honor the Catholic faith in a unique queer perspective.
Pura Luka Vega mentioned that while they can handle the criticism, the reaction from the public has caused concern for their family’s safety. Vega believes that the issue does not need to be blown out of proportion and does not warrant national attention. They expressed hope for others to understand their perspective.
“I feel like they want me to apologize, but I apologize if it made them uncomfortable, but I really did that performance as a way for me to kind of heal the exclusion I have experienced as a Catholic, as a queer person being somewhat being made to feel that I don’t really belong,” Vega said in an interview via The Source of CNN Philippines.
