It is unclear exactly where the idiom “eat words” came from. However, John Ray’s English Proverbs (1670), where was published. [Later portion of the 1500s].
The idiom has a negative meaning in the way that it is now used. The term does, however, appear in the Bible. It means to savor the Lord’s word to absorb it. Then the Lord said to me, “Human being, eat what you find. Eat this scroll. Then go and speak to the people of Israel.”
