Here’s why Michelle Dee decided to come out after Miss Universe Philippines 2023
MICHELLE DEE – The newly crowned Miss Universe Philippines 2023 explained why she decided to come out after the pageant.
Recently, the daughter of Miss International 1979 Melanie Marquez revealed that she identifies as bisexual. Her coming out received a lot of support, but it also sparked discussions about the timing of her announcement after the pageant.
In an interview with Vogue Philippines, Michelle explained that she didn’t feel the need to come out during the pageant because her main mission was to advocate for autism awareness, autism acceptance, and inclusivity. She acknowledged that she had been advised to come out earlier, but she felt it would have detracted from her primary goals. Michelle didn’t want her sexuality to define her and believed that using it for marketing or attention wouldn’t feel right.
Michelle Dee emphasized the importance of individuals in the LGBTQIA+ community having the right to come out on their own terms when they feel ready. She wanted to make her announcement when she felt it was the right time for her.
Addressing past photos that were spread with malicious intent, Michelle viewed it as an empowering move. She chose to switch the narrative and use it to empower herself, expressing that she is not ashamed of her past.
Meanwhile, Michelle Dee plans to utilize her platform as Miss Universe Philippines to empower the LGBTQIA+ community. She aims to be a positive role model and advocate for inclusivity and acceptance. As Miss Universe Philippines, Michelle will represent the Philippines in the international pageant in El Salvador, Central America.
