CEBU – A grandmother in the city has made the decision to live on the streets alongside her pets.
People living on the street often choose to have their pets with them for several reasons. First and foremost, pets offer companionship and emotional support, which is especially crucial for individuals experiencing homelessness. The unconditional love and acceptance provided by pets create a sense of belonging and purpose in difficult circumstances.
Pets also provide a sense of security. Being homeless exposes individuals to various dangers and uncertainties. Having a pet by their side acts as a deterrent to potential threats and offers a level of protection. The bond between the person and their pet becomes a source of comfort and reassurance in an otherwise challenging and unpredictable environment.
Additionally, pets bring routine and responsibility to the lives of those living on the streets. Taking care of a pet involves regular feeding, grooming, and exercise, which provide structure and purpose. This responsibility fosters a sense of self-worth and motivation, helping individuals stay engaged and focused.
Moreover, pets offer physical comfort, especially during harsh weather conditions. They provide warmth and can be cuddled with, offering solace and alleviating the challenges of sleeping rough on cold nights.
Speaking of which, Lola Anna Garcia, 93, finds herself without a permanent residence, so she sleeps wherever darkness falls. However, kind-hearted individuals have been reaching out to her, providing food and assistance for her daily needs. She even uses some of the aid she receives to buy food for her pets, ensuring they are taken care of as well.
Despite numerous offers from shelters to provide her with a place to live, Lola Anna has declined, preferring to stay with her animal companions. Her bond with her pets is incredibly strong, and she finds solace and comfort in their presence.
