Artist Receives Bible Verse Instead of Payment for a Portrait Commission

Bible verse as payment for portrait commission?

CHABOY DELA CRUZ – An artist took to the social networking site, Facebook wherein he shared his reaction after receiving a Bible verse instead of payment for a portrait commission.

His post featured his conversation thread with the woman, who sent him two selfies. The latter then instructed the artist to choose who was the prettier and that she would wait until Wednesday to complete it. When Chaboy asked if he would be paid, the client replied with a Bible verse from Hebrews 13:5-8.

The artist explained that he was not pawning his soul to the devil but needed money because he was an artist. He even offered a discount to her. However, the client seemed unwilling to pay, instead taking the artist’s full name to “pray over.”

“Sendan ba naman ako ng bible verse, so pano pa ko tatanggi nyan ante?” Chaboy wrote in the caption of his Facebook post. In an interview with Balita, the artist explained that he posted it to raise awareness that portrait work is not free and that Bible verses should not be used in such situations.

“The reason for posting this convo with her, is to aware them na hindi po libre yung ganitong profession, and also, dapat hindi rin po natin ginagamit yung mga bible verses sa mga walang kabuluhang bagay gaya po nitos,” he said.

Balita also learned that the artist did not personally know the client. “Hindi ko po s’ya kilala personally, noong una po akala ko kliyente po s’ya na magpapagawa ng portrait, pero di po ata s’ya aware na may bayad po ang ganitong profession, hindi na rin po ako nag-reply after po ng last convo namin,” he said.

On the positive side, it seems that the client’s “pray over” strategy was effective because many people sent private messages commissioning artwork after the post went viral.
