In an interview with Bombo Radyo Laoag on April 30, Alexis Alegado said that he deleted all his social media accounts before the board exam results were released. He was surprised to learn that he was the top 1.

According to DSWD Field Office 1, Alegado was also a beneficiary of the Expanded Student’s Grants-in-Aid Program for Poverty Alleviation (ESGP-PA) program. Because of their economic status, he was automatically qualified for the Tertiary Education Subsidy (TES) under the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act or Republic Act 10931.

ESGP-PA beneficiaries are “poor but deserving students” who are part of the families listed in the 4Ps program of DSWD. They can enroll in select State Universities and Colleges (SUCs) for Commission on Higher Education’s (CHED) priority programs and other courses offered under government key growth areas.

ESGP-PA grantees receive book allowance, school supplies, transportation, and miscellaneous personal expenses. There is also an allowance for documented rental or purchase of a personal computer or laptop and other education-related expenses.

The program also covers the cost of the student’s accommodation in a room or boarding house. An additional subsidy is provided if the student is a Person with a Disability (PWD). The program also covers the expenses of the student for the first licensure examination.
