The expression “turn the clock back” has its roots in the nineteenth century. It typically describes a vain attempt to go back in time and is synonymous with “turn back the hands of time.”

It was regrettably never possible. Erle Stanley Garner coined the phrase “You can’t turn back the hands of the clock,” referring to the impossibility of going back in time to make any changes, in his 1941 book “The Case of the Turning Tide.”
