The original meaning of the idiom bare bones is a person who is extremely slender to the point of looking like a skeleton and who could not possibly become any weaker by being alive. It was used for the first time in 1598.
The term “bare-bones” first appeared in print at the turn of the 20th century and gained popularity after the 1940s.
Bare Bones Meaning:
- most basic and important elements or facts
- not in-depth, simply covering the most fundamental details or information
- the fundamental structure and organization of something
- comprising only what is essential or necessary
- the nonreducible least and most important elements
