COIN A PHRASE MEANING – Find out what coin a phrase really means. Example sentences of this idiomatic expression can also be found here.

This expression’s origins can be traced to the early 14th century when sheet metal was stamped with dies to create coins, a process is known as “minting.” Coins were the name given to these dies, and as a result, the term “coining” came to mean “invention.”

Although the phrase appears in the writings of George Puttenham (1589) and W. Shakespeare (1607), the specific word (as we now use it) appears to have its roots in American literature, with the earliest known use appearing in the journal “The Southport American” in 1848.
