Most theories argue that William Shakespeare’s play King Lear serves as the inspiration for the idiom “come full circle.” He refers to the fabled goddess Fortuna, who was in charge of Fortune and was charged with turning the Wheel of Fortune, when he says, “The wheel has come full circle,” in the third stanza of the fifth chapter. Since then, the phrase has evolved to refer to a situation in which events come to a close exactly as they started.

The expression may also be used in connection to the medieval idea of the wheel of fortune, which predicted that people who had the good fortune at one point in their lives would also have a bad fortune at other points.
