Here’s the reaction of Rowena Guanzon on the claim of Sec. Galvez that ROTC can help “cure” mental health problems
ROWENA GUANZON – The former Comelec commissioner reacted to the claim of Department of National Defense (DND) Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. that the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program can help “cure” mental health problems.
On Monday, February 6, 2023, Galvez claimed that because ROTC training might increase one’s “frustration tolerance,” it can “cure” mental health issues.
His statement earned reactions from well-known personalities including P3PWD Party-list representative Rowena Guanzon. In a Twitter post, she wrote: “Mental health pro[b]lems cannot be cured by more stress and physical strain.” She added: “In fact it can make things worse for the person with a disabili[ty].”
Meanwhile, the restoration of ROTC for Filipino students is currently being pushed by lawmakers, albeit it may take on a new moniker. House Bill (HB) No. 6687 was decisively approved by the House of Representatives on its third and final reading in December of last year.
The official title of the bill is “An Act Instituting a National Citizens Service Training Program (NCSTP) in All Public and Private Tertiary Education Institutions, Repealing for the Purpose Republic Act (RA) No.9163, Otherwise Known as the National Service Training Program Act”.
All students enrolled in undergraduate degree programs at all public and private higher education institutions (HEIs), including those enrolled in technical-vocational education and training (TVET) programs or courses offered by the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), must complete a two-year NCSTP.
