Michelle Dee: “I’m not as privileged as people think that I am”
MICHELLE DEE – The Miss Universe Philippines 2023 hopeful recently revealed that she had a hard childhood.
Michelle appeared on Wednesday’s episode of “Fast Talk with Boy Abunda” where she spoke about her childhood.
On Wednesday, Michelle was asked what she felt she did right and wrong in the pageant last year.
Michelle shared in an interview with Boy Abunda that she felt she fell short of her “relatability” last year as she was not able to share her stories and struggles, as well as the reason why she’s strong like her mother.
She also said that she really needs people to see that she’s not as privileged as people think she is, adding that she actually had a hard childhood.
“My mom [Miss International 1979 Melanie Marquez] and my dad had a rough marriage so, kaya kami lumipat sa States is to get away from that drama,” she shared. “That’s why I grew up in the States ’cause my mom wanted to protect us from the noise.“
Michelle also said that she grew up with parent figures or those around her that would criticize every move she makes.

She also revealed that she’s having experienced racism as she and her sister were the only two Asians in Utah. According to her, bullying became physical but “not as far as being beaten up”.
In the same interview, she revealed that she’s having gone through a tough year last year as her parents got into accidents. She also shared that her mother is “taking a break” in the United States.
