SIM REGISTRATION DEADLINE – The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) reminded the public about the deadline for the SIM registration program.
On Thursday, the DICT reminded the public that the program will run only until April 26, 2023. The department also warned that unregistered SIMs by this date will be deactivated.

SIM REGISTRATION – The Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said that selfie verification will prevent the pre-registration of SIMs.
The DICT maintained that selfie verification remained an important part of the SIM (subscriber identity module) registration amidst privacy concerns raised by a group.
During a televised briefing last Wednesday, DICT Undersecretary Anna Mae Lamentillo described the selfie verification as an “additional verification mechanism” in order to prevent SIMs from being used for fraud.
Lamentillo also noted that selfie verification will prevent the pre-registration of SIMs and will deter “spoofing” or an act when a user identify themselves as another user when they send a message.
“Itong selfie verification system, it’s a way for the public to be ensured that their identities are protected,” Lamentillo said. “Ang ginagawa kasi doon sa selfie verification system, kailangan tugma iyong mukha ng nasa ID at iyong nagri-register dahil ayaw nating gamitin iyong spoofing, which is also a crime under the SIM Registration Law.“
The DICT official also noted that more than 16.5 million mobile phone users have already registered their SIMs as of January 9, while they’re also expecting telecommunication companies, the interior and education departments, to set up SIM registration sites in remote areas.
Lamentillo’s response came after the Junk SIM Registration Network called for the stopping of the registration of SIMs in the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Lamentillo disclosed that the government is currently “on track” of hitting 1 million SIM registrants per day. However, the DICT official clarified that there could be a “lull” in the registration in the coming days and then a surge once the deadline nears.
