Jobless husband still goes to “work” because he’s afraid to tell his wife, family the truth
DOUBLE LIFE – A Hong Kong national was fired from his job a year ago, but he still pretends to go to work every day because he is afraid to tell his wife and family the truth.
He applied to almost all of the job vacancies he knew about that were posted on Hong Kong employment websites. However, he did not receive a single response.
It was on January 5, 2023 when he posted his predicament anonymously via Office Daily’s Facebook page. His story was published in the South China Morning Post on January 16, 2023. Apparently, the identity of the 46-year-old man was not revealed. His previous job was also not mentioned.
When he was fired, he pretended he was only on a three-week leave. Then he pretended to leave the house for work. “I dare not tell my wife,” he said.
He is now struggling to cope with his double life. He claims that he always waits for public holidays to have a legitimate excuse not to leave their house.
He takes money from his savings as if he still has a salary. But he’s worried that he could no longer endure pretending that he has a job. According to him, he will do it until the Lunar New Year on January 22.
He will still buy new clothes for his children and give them hongbao, a gift of money packed into a red packet, known to Filipinos as “ang pao.”
His story earned the sympathy of many. One netizen commented: “I hope you find a good job soon. Add oil!” Another netizen wrote: “Meanwhile, you can get a temporary part-time job to ease your pressure. A lower income is better than no income at all.”
