AS BOLD AS BRASS MEANING – Find out what as bold as brass really means. Example sentences of this idiomatic expression can also be found here.

The idiom “as bold as brass” dates back to the 16th century. Brass Crosby, Lord Mayor of London in the late 1700s, is credited with coining the idiom. By supporting the printing of a pamphlet about legislative procedures, the Lord Mayor went against Parliament.

The phrase was coined shortly after Brass Cosby’s incident in George Parker’s 1789 book “Life’s Painter of Variegated Characters in Public and Private Life.”

Other versions, however, contradict the preceding account, claiming that the word “brass” was used to signify bravery for at least forty years prior to the lord mayor’s occurrence. The phrase “bold as brass” was at its peak of popularity in the early 18th century.
