Here’s the latest update on Percy Lapid killing
GERALD BANTAG – The suspended Director-General of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) is facing charges filed by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) following the death of veteran broadcaster Percy Lapid.
Percival Mabasa, also known as Percy Lapid, was shot dead on Monday evening, October 3, in Barangay Talon Dos, Las Piñas City. Lapid was on his way to work for his online broadcast program “Lapid Fire” at DWBL 1242 when he was shot several times at the gate of BF Resort Village at around 8:30 p.m.
Lapid was a columnist for Hataw and the host of the online broadcast program “Percy Lapid Fire” at DWBL 1242. He was known for his furious commentaries on different happenings in the country, especially in politics.
On Monday. NBI and PNP filed two separate charges before the Department of Justice (DOJ) against Bantag and BuCor Directorate for Security and Operations SJO2 Ricardo Zulueta. They were tagged as masterminds in the killing of Lapid and the alleged middleman Crisanto/Jun Villamor.
“It was found through the investigation that both Director-General Gerald Bantag and DSO Ricardo Zulueta were behind the killing of both Percy Lapid and Jun Villamor,” Atty. Eugene Javier of NBI said in a press conference.
Lapid was allegedly killed due to his “continued exposé” against Bantag via his program, “Lapid Fire.” In order to identify Lapid, Zulueta purportedly sent a video of Lapid slamming Bantag to gang commanders, who supposedly facilitated the killing.
On the other hand, the killing of Villamor was allegedly done to cover up the assassination of Lapid. Joel Escorial, a self-confessed gunman, identified Villamor as the middleman on October 18. That same day, the latter died after being suffocated with a plastic bag.
Bantag, Zulueta and four gang commanders- Denver Mayores, Alvin Labra, Aldrin Galicia, and Alfie Pearedonda, were named as respondents in the death of Lapid. They allegedly participated in the murder through “indispensible cooperation.”
