Why did President Duterte tag the country as “Republic of Marites”?
MARITES – President Rodrigo Duterte dubbed the Republic of the Philippines as “Republic of Marites.”
Marites refer to those who love to gossip or “chismis.” In other words, it means: “Mare, ano ang latest?”
During the public address of President Duterte last May 12, he said that the country is now the “Republic of Marites.”
According to him, even men nowadays are being hooked on gossiping.
“Kung gusto niyo ng tsismis, marami ako. This is a Republic of Marites na ngayon. Lahat ng tao may tsismis. Babae, lalaki. Noon sa mga babae lang iyan,” he said.
He added that he felt sorry for women named “Marites.”
“Nakakawawa mga babae na pangalan Marites talaga. Pagsabi dun sa classroom, Marites, ganun, tsismosa—lahat naman,” he said.

Meanwhile, the self-proclaimed “Pambansang Marites” is no other than the so-called social media influencer, Xian Gaza.
Gaza has been known for his series of claims and pronouncements against well-known celebrities.
Aside from his exposé on social media, he is also prominent for his extravagant date proposals to celebrities.
