A Barangay Captain was arrested in an anti-illegal drugs operation

BARANGAY CAPTAIN – A village chief and his nephew were arrested in an anti-illegal drugs operation on Tuesday in Bato, Leyte.

The suspects were identified as Rogelio Daño, 57, and his nephew Cesario Dañ Lambujon, 35.

Rogelio is the captain of Brgy. Sta. Fe in Matalom town, Leyte, and also the president of the Association of Barangay Captains in the said town.

The operation was conducted by personnel from the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and Bato Municipal Police Station around 7:15 p.m., Tuesday, March 15.

The suspects seized 100 grams of suspected shabu worth P680,000.

Daño is said to be the largest supplier of illegal drugs in the fifth district of Leyte.

Daño and his nephew were detained at the PDEA facility and are facing charges of violating Republic Act 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act.

Under the law, anyone guilty of importation or sale of dangerous drugs, with the manufacture of illegal drugs, or with the operation of a drug den can be punished with life imprisonment to death and a fine ranging from P500k to 10 million pesos.

On the other hand, anyone guilty of importing or selling drug precursors, protecting other violators, or working as an employee in a drug den can be punished with 12 years and a day to 20 years of imprisonment and a fine ranging from P100k to P500k

The maximum penalty is given if the sale or delivery was done within 100 meters of a school, if a minor was directly involved in the process of handling dangerous drugs, or if the victim of the offense is a mentally incapacitated individual.
