Meta (formerly Facebook) and OVP on claims of Facebook-Robredo talks to remove pro-Marcos accounts.
Here’s what Meta (formerly Facebook) and the Office of the Vice President (OVP) said on the claims of a senatorial aspirant who was an ardent supporter of the Marcoses that Facebook representatives and Vice President Leni Robredo have met to discuss the removal of accounts that were supportive of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.
Meta has disputed the claims of senatorial aspirant Larry Gadon that the Vice President and officials of the social media giant have met to discuss the removal of pro-Marcos accounts.
The company asserted that peaceful political speech wasn’t censored and that only contents that violated their Community Standards were removed on their platform.
Meta said in a statement sent to Inquirer that no one from the Vice President’s team met with officials of the social media giant in order to discuss such matters contrary to Gadon’s claims.
“No one from Meta recently met with the Vice President or her team, or made any agreement to remove political content from our platform,” said a Meta spokesperson which the company didn’t name in its statement. “We do not arbitrarily censor peaceful political speech on Facebook, and we will only remove content if they violate our Community Standards.”
Meta also said that they have a global process for government requests to restrict or remove content and that process was the same in the Philippines as in every other country around the world.
The company added that they shared details of their compliance with those requests in their twice-yearly Transparency Report.
Similarly, lawyer Barry Gutierrez, the spokesperson of Vice President Leni Robredo, has rejected Gadon’s claims. In a message to Inquirer, Gutierrez said “Not true”.

Earlier, Gadon claimed of getting a tip from a source in Facebook about a meeting between the social media firm’s officials and Robredo’s camp supposedly for the removal of pro-Marcos accounts.
“Ito ang nakakatakot dahil lahat ng mga Facebook account na sumusuporta sa UniTeam ni Bongbong Marcos at Inday Sara ay posibleng ma-suspend o mabaklas nang tuluyan dahil sa pag-uudyok ng kampo ni Leni gamit ang kathang-isip na akusasyon,” Gadon said.
