From caregiver to fashion designer
GENETTE MUJAR – A former caregiver is now a famous fashion designer in Canada.
Mujar is the owner and Chief Operating Officer (COO) of a Canada-based clothing company, Gnetz Design.
Genette who hails from Daraga, Albay finished her studies at Bicol University.
Since she was a little girl, Genette loves fashion designing. In fact, there were times she joined prestigious fashion shows.
Every time her classmates ask her about her unique and stylish outfits, she replies: “It’s from Gnetz.”
That’s how the Gnetz brand started.
However, when she had kids, she decided to set aside her dreams.
She was forced to become an overseas Filipino worker (OFW) to give a better life for her children and what she had gone through wasn’t easy.
She once worked in Taiwan, before she transferred to Hong Kong wherein she experienced being kicked out by his employers.
In 2007, she went to Canada and worked as a caregiver. According to her, her salary at the time wasn’t enough to support her family back in the Philippines.
However, despite being lacking financially, she kept her passion for fashion alive.
She often goes to thrift stores looking for old clothes which she can restyle.
After a few years, she decided to pursue her dream of becoming a fashion designer.
She enrolled in a fashion school and despite being the oldest in her class, she received an award when she graduate.
She was then hired as a fashion designer of a local clothing company in Vancouver.
Among her favorite design is trendy Filipiniana. She also had a fashion show in 2018.
Genette is hoping that her story becomes an inspiration to many.
