Nancy Binay: “Sadly, it is like saying that our martyrs and heroes are no longer worth our money”
NANCY BINAY – The senator did not like the decision made by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) to change the design of the 1,000 peso bill.
Recently, the BSP announced a new design of P1,000 replacing the three heroes of the second world war; José Abad Santos, Vicente Lim, and Josefa Llanes Escoda, with an image of the Philippine Eagle.
According to Binay, this is a big insult to the families of the said heroes so she called the attention of Congress to act on the said decision of the BSP.
She stressed that the design of money should not be decided by BSP alone.
She cited that redesigning the money should have the concurrence of the congress and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP).
Binay noted that removing the heroes for the eagle is like saying that the martyrs are “no longer worth our money.”
Bayan Muna party-list Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate said it is possible that changing the design of P1,000 is a way to change the history of the country.
Based on the report of dailybncnews.com, the relatives of Escoda, Lim and Santos expressed their displeasure with regards to the decision of BSP.
According to them, it looks like their ancestors died again because of what the BSP did.
“It’s more painful than what the Japanese did because the ones that are redesigning the banknote are Filipinos,'” a relative of Josefa Escoda said.
BSP has not made a statement about the criticism they are receiving.
