A stray bullet is a bullet that, after being fired from a gun, hits an unintended target.

In the Philippines, incidents involving stray bullets rose during the New Year revelry.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) has reportedly recorded 52 stray bullet incidents during the monitoring between December 16, 2015 and January 5, 2016, of which 42 victims were injured.

Meanwhile, a one year and 10 months old baby girl from Purok Malunao, Barangay Caduha-an, Cadiz City, Negros Occidental died after being hit by a stray bullet.

The victim was rushed to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital but died the following day according to Police Lt. Alfonso Precia, deputy police chief of Cadiz City Police Station.

The victim was playing on the bed inside their house when they heard a gunshot.

Later, the family heard another gunfire with a bullet passing through their wall made of galvanized corrugated iron.

All of a sudden, the baby girl fell to the ground and her parents spotted that her head is bleeding.

Two days after the incident, a 46-year-old forest ranger named Nomar Ayan Berto who hails from Barangay Caduha-an, surrendered to the authorities.

According to the report of Manila Bulletin, his companions witnessed him using a .45 caliber on Sunday afternoon.

Berto, who is said to be a relative of the victim’s family is currently being detained at the police station.

Precia said that the latter is willing to execute an extrajudicial confession.

The authorities are trying to locate the firearm used in the incident- which is considered by the police as a “case of indiscriminate firing.”
