Pres. Duterte Reacts To Case of Minor who got infected with COVID-19 after going to Mall
DUTERTE – President Rodrigo Roa Duterte called the local government units to implement age restrictions among minors in malls.
For more than a year since the COVID-19 pandemic in the Philippines started, minors were barred from being in public places like entering shopping malls. Schools adopted the blended learning approach so students need not be physically present in school.
For the delivery of the lessons, it is done through educational modules prepared by the teachers and online classes. Thus, most minors were just inside their residences for more than a year.
It was just recently when Metro Manila shifted under Alert Level 2 that allows minors in public areas including shopping malls. Undeniably, a lot of parents brought their kids to malls.
However, a few days after minors were allowed in shopping malls, a report about a 2-year-old child who got infected with COVID-19 after going to the mall hooked attention. It ignited calls for parents not to bring their unvaccinated kids in public areas.
The said incident reached Pres. Rodrigo Roa Duterte who called on parents not to expose their children who have yet to be vaccinated against COVID-19. Based on a report on ABS-CBN News, he stressed that the unvaccinated minors still do not have defenses against the virus.
Pres. Duterte also called the local government units (LGUs) to pass ordinances that order age restrictions for minors who will be allowed to enter the shopping malls. He stressed that the government cannot allow minors who are under 12 years old and those who have not been vaccinated in public places.
The health authorities and the government nodded on the vaccination of minors who are age 12 to 17 years old. It is currently ongoing. The Chief Executive is calling out to the parents and guardians “to be mindful of the risks” in bringing unvaccinated minors in public areas.
