COMELEC will organize “hybrid debates” for the 2022 elections.
COMELEC — The Commission on Elections announced on Thursday that the poll body will organize “hybrid debates” for the 2022 elections.
The “hybrid debates” will consist of 1 primary and 3 presidential debates, as well as 3 vice-presidential debates.
COMELEC Spokesperson James Jimenez said at a press conference that the poll body will be the one to organize the whole debates which may begin with the presidential debates as early as January 2022.
He also said that the political candidates will be debating face-to-face but the audience will be virtual.
Jimenez was also asked who will be present in the one primary debate.
“That’s the one probably early of the year sort of a teaser for the debates just for president…probably January,” Jimenez said. “Again all of these are still in the planning stage but yes January is probably gonna be presidential.”
Jimenez said that private entities may hold the senatorial debates as he expressed his support for it, adding that the poll body was set to release guidelines on how the debates would be safely conducted in order to prevent the spread of coronavirus infections.
Earlier, the poll body said that it has received 91 petitions for the cancellation of certificates of candidacy (COC) of current political aspirants for the national positions in the 2022 elections.
Meanwhile, COMELEC Education and Information Department director Elaiza Sabile-David said at the separate Laging Handa briefing that the poll body may have 205 aspirants for national posts as “nuisance candidates”.
