Tech-savvy cheating in India
CHEATING – At least ten (10) people were arrested in India for their alleged plan to cheat during exams using Bluetooth devices concealed in their flip-flops
On Sunday, the authorities were allowed to cut off internet access while examination in Rajasthan among 1.6 million students is taking place.
Cheating is a rampant problem in India. One strategy of a group there is to use Bluetooth devices hidden in the sole of their flip-flops that can actually receive calls with receivers in their ears.
According to Priti Chandra, an official in Bikaner, in order to execute the plan, the accomplices stay outside the exam room while dictating the correct answer to someone taking the exam.
Apparently, the new modus operandi was not successful after several takers were arrested for allegedly acting suspiciously outside the examination hall the night before the exam. Bluetooth devices were then discovered in their flip-flops.
The official said that they were aware of cheating in the said area but it was a “totally new modus operandi.” He noted that cheaters are getting too “tech-savvy.”
Based on the investigation, there were 25 students who bought the said flip-flop at a gang worth $8,100 per pair.
Before the exam started, the information was disseminated to other districts. Students were required to take off their shoes, sandals, and flip-flops and leave them outside the examination hall.
Cheating is most likely to happen in government, university, and school examinations. There were instances that gangs steal or illegally obtain exam papers and even sell them.
