According to Aksyon Demokratiko chairperson Ernest Ramel, Gutoc was a “perfect fit” for the party because of her good record in public service.

In a statement issued Friday, Ramel said that Gutoc had initiated community projects that have helped uplift the marginalized and vulnerable, adding that the party welcomed with pride a highly accomplished woman like Gutoc to Aksyon Demokratiko’s National Executive Board.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, who was the newly-elected president of the party, also welcomed Gutoc and said that he’s happy to have her in their party.

GMA News Online reported that Moreno was elected as party president during its general membership meeting held Tuesday night.

According to Moreno, he had talked to Gutoc when she visited the City Hall and their group expressed gratitude for the construction of a Muslim Cemetery and Cultural Hall in Manila. For Moreno, Muslims were important in history and in the present happenings in society.

Aksyon Demokratiko secretary-general and former National Youth Commission chairperson Leon Flores III said that Gutoc would be a strong voice for Mindanaoans and Muslims given her initiatives and contributions for the region.

Flores added that Gutoc was also Aksyon Kabataan’s esteemed speaker in their first national conference in 1998 and so her engagement with the party went a long way. He also said that Gutoc understood youth development having been an active and progressive youth leader.

For her part, Gutoc said that Aksyon Demokratiko’s focus on peace, jobs, hunger, empowerment of the masses and of the youth resonated quite powerfully with her as those were the same objectives she had set for her work.

Gutoc added that she had always been a supporter of the late senator Raul Roco, who founded Aksyon Demokratiko in 1997.
