Manila Mayor Isko Moreno was elected as president of Aksyon Demokratiko.
On Thursday, Aksyon Demokratiko’s new party chairperson Ernest Ramel confirmed that Manila Mayor Francisco “Isko Moreno” Domagoso had been elected as party president.
Ramel told Rappler that despite the postponement, Moreno became a member of the party on August 5 as the event that was rescheduled was merely “ceremonial”.
According to Ramel, the party elected new leaders last August 10 to make it to the Commission on Elections’ deadline for parties’ Sworn Information Update Statements (SUIS), which included their list of party officers.
Aksyon Demokratiko said that the party and Moreno had a meeting of minds and hearts in many aspects and they agreed on the pandemic response then to providing livelihood and jobs at these times and also agreed on the rule of law, focusing on education, health care, and housing.
In addition, Demokratiko said that the party was proud that Moreno was elected as party president.
Citing Moreno’s “clean track record, tangible accomplishments,” and similar vision to the party, Ramel said that they’re confident that Moreno will be able to help lead the party in its thrust to be a unifying force in an atmosphere of heavy political polarization”.
Ramel’s confirmation came a week after Moreno’s formal oathtaking as Aksyon Demokratiko member was rescheduled due to crowding in Manila vaccination sites last August 5.

Moreno taking on leadership of Aksyon Demokratiko fueled speculations that he’s running for a national post in the upcoming 2022 elections, something he’s yet to confirm.
Moreno’s election took place a day after President Rodrigo Duterte’s outburst against him and the President’s threat to prohibit the city from distributing “ayuda” to its residents.
Moreno was seen as a possible challenger to President Duterte and his 2022 bets after he placed second in surveys about preferred presidential and vice-presidential bets.
Rappler reported that Aksyon Demokratiko was recognized as a political party in 1998 by the Commission on Elections (Comelec). Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto and Pasig City Representative Roman Romulo were also two of Aksyon Demokratiko’s prominent members.
