President Duterte joked about possibly contracting COVID-19 during his last SONA

On Monday, President Rodrigo Duterte stayed true to his character during his last State of the Nation Address (SONA) by making a joke about possibly contracting COVID-19.

Just when you thought that the sixth and final SONA of President Duterte will end without a joke from him, he found a way to squeeze in one about his mispronunciation of some words.

Two hours into his speech, President Duterte started talking about the unexpected health crisis that hit his presidency. The President started stammering then touching his neck as if to check if he had a fever, one of the symptoms of coronavirus disease (COVID-19).

Hindi na ako maka-pronounce nang mabuti, baka meron na ako. May ambulansya ba diyan? Mukhang iba na, I cannot pronounce the words. I hope this is not a symptomatic (sic),” President Duterte said.

It was last July 12 when President Duterte completed his two doses of Sinopharm COVID-19 vaccine.

President Duterte said towards the end of his nearly-three-hour speech that he’s out of breath — another symptom of coronavirus disease (COVID-19) — and said that his heart was starting to beat differently.

Naghihingal ako, baka dito ako mamatay pagka-presidente. Iba na ang pitik ng ano ko, kasing-kasing ko, puso,” President Duterte said.

President Duterte’s health had always been a public concern as his spokesperson said last April that the President remained “fit and healthy” for his age amidst speculations of poor health after canceling his regular public address twice that week.
