The Philippine Air Force promoted Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz to Staff Sergeant
The Philippine Air Force (PAF) promoted Olympic gold medalist and Filipina weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz to the higher rank of Staff Sergeant.
Fresh from her historic feat at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Japan, Hidilyn received another reward which came in the form of a rank promotion from the Philippine Air Force.
The Armed Forces of the Philippines on Wednesday confirmed the promotion of Diaz from her previous post as Sergeant.
“In lieu of her recent historic win in the Olympics, the Philippine Air Force through its Commanding General approved the promotion of Sgt. Hidilyn Diaz effective 27 July 2021 to the rank of Staff Sergeant,” AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Cirilito Sobejana said in a statement.
The AFP also said that this move marked Diaz’s “remarkable achievements in the field of sports and for bringing pride and glory to our country”.

Prior to this, PAF Commanding General Allen Paredes on Tuesday released a video message saying that he “intends” to promote Diaz to the next higher rank after delivering the Philippines’ first Olympic gold medal since the country joined in the Olympics 97 years ago.
“Sgt. Hidilyn Diaz of the Philippine Air Force was enlisted, noting her huge potential as an athlete. The Armed Forces of the Philippines has consistently supported AFP athletes including Sgt. Hidilyn Diaz. She has been given a wide latitude for her to pursue training for various competitions including this Olympics,” Paredes said.
Also, the PAF Chief bared that they’re preparing a “warm welcome” for Diaz when she arrived back home and finished her quarantine.
Manila Bulletin reported that Staff Sergeant was the fifth-highest rank among senior NCOs (non-commissioned officers) in the Philippine Air Force.
An officer with the rank of staff sergeant, according to a report, received a monthly salary of PHP 30,000.
