In his weekly pre-recorded public address, President Duterte said that he’s “constrained” to keep the wearing of face shields mandatory both indoors and outdoors in order to prevent a “disaster” that may be caused by the COVID-19 Delta variant.

The President apologized for causing confusion by discussing the possibility of easing the rule on wearing of face shield in public. President Duterte said that he was just “shooting the breeze” but never “said with finality that we will do away with the face shield.”

That is a very small price to pay rather than gamble doing away with it and courting disaster,” President Duterte said.

According to President Duterte, the Philippines can’t afford a second wave of coronavirus infections since the economy had not yet recovered from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

The President also said that he’s “constrained” to go back to the old practice due to the threat posed by the COVID-19 Delta variant.

I’m constrained to go back to the old practice because of the threat posed by the new variant (Delta). I cannot afford to place the nation, the national interest of the Republic, [in danger] by just sometimes adopting this and being lenient. It would be disastrous for this country. That is why the stricter you are, the better,” President Duterte said.

President Duterte’s statement came after the Department of Health (DOH) reported that four more individuals got infected by the COVID-19 Delta variant, bringing the total number of coronavirus infections to 17 on June 21.

Prior to this, Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in his regular press briefing on Monday that wearing of face shields was no longer required outdoors because the only thing the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) appealed was the wearing of the face shield indoors.
