As the Philippines continued to receive COVID-19 vaccines from COVAX facility, President Duterte said that the Philippines will be donating USD 1 million to repay its generosity.

The President revealed in his pre-recorded public address late Monday evening that he answered the call of the COVAX Facility. According to President Duterte, the COVAX Facility had been one of the first to help the country start the vaccination program against COVID-19.

Napakabait ng COVAX sa atin. At the time we needed it most, [it is] one of the earliest agencies to help us, aside from the contributions made by China. We were recipients of COVAX vaccines many times and it has helped a lot in our desire to vaccinate Filipinos,” President Duterte said.

President Duterte’s statement came as he revealed that the COVAX Facility had formally asked the Philippines, among other countries, for donations so that they can get more COVID-19 vaccines that will be distributed to other countries.

The COVAX Facility was a mechanism led by the World Health Organization (WHO) and was designed to guarantee fair, rapid, and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines worldwide.

To date, the Philippines had received a total of 2,749,050 COVID-19 vaccine doses from the COVAX Facility.
