Filipino-American superhero Ari Agbayani is among the forces to fight the bad guys in the new series “The United States of Captain America #4.”
Agbayani was introduced in line with the celebration of the 80th anniversary of Marvel’s Captain America this month
Created by writers Alyssa Wong (Star Wars: Doctor Aphra) and Jodi Nishijima (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), Ari Agbayani is a local Captain America-inspired hero who demands justice on her college campus.
According to Wong, editor Alanna Smith spoke to her in connection with creating a new and local Captain America for the series.
“I immediately knew I wanted to write a Filipino-American girl. There just aren’t very many of us in comics! I grew up without a Filipino-American community for the most part, so every time I see a Filipino character, I get excited. And getting to create one—a Captain America, even!—feels incredibly special,” she said.
The release of a Filipino-American superhero by Marvel is timely now that racist attacks on Asians in America are escalating.
Watch out for Ari Agbayani’s release in the Marvel Cinematic Universe this September 22.
