Davao de Oro hit by diarrhea outbreak
At least five people died while 200 got sick when a diarrhea outbreak hit Monkayo, Davao de Oro.
In an interview, Mayor Ramil Gentugaya said that of the 16 “puroks” in Barangay Pasian, nine had recorded cases of diarrhea.
“As of last night, may 212 cases. Five ang patay. Isa sa mga nasawi ay isang three years old. [‘Yung mga edad nila ay] 38, 41, 88, 78 and three years old na namatay kahapon ng umaga,” he said.
According to him, it was on Wednesday morning when residents began experiencing diarrhea.
Due to fears of possibly contracting COVID-19 after having diarrhea- one of the symptoms of the dreaded disease, some of them waited until the afternoon to go to the health center.
“‘Yung mga nag-report sa health center (na residente), malala na, severely dehydrated na,” he said.
“Pinaikot niya ‘yung BHW [barangay health workers] natin at doon nalaman na sa Pasian, mahigit 100 na ang may LBM,” he added.
Before experiencing symptoms, the residents said they only drank water.
One of the residents gave water to his pet dog and the canine also passed away.
On the other hand, the 3-year-old child who died was found out to having breastfed by the mother and not due to drinking water.
Based on the initial test results, it was revealed that diarrhea was due to bacterial contamination.
Water samples have been taken and the result will be out this coming Monday, June 21.
