Chikungunya hits 40 people in Pola, Oriental Mindoro

At least forty (40) people were hit by chikungunya in Pola, Oriental Mindoro according to the town’s health officer.

Pola municipal health officer Dr. Leah Pinafrancia Reyes said on Tuesday that they started to record cases of chikungunya two months ago but in the last 2 weeks, it increased.

Chikungunya, a viral disease transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes, hit residents of Pola aged 30 to 50 years old.

So far, some of those affected have recovered from the disease which resulted to joint pain, rashes and fever.

“‘Yong iba [na] may fever, ayaw nila magpa-check up kasi natatakot magpa-check up, baka ma-swab, baka COVID,” Reyes said.

According to Dr. Reyes, the situation is still under control and the local government is already conducting misting.

Pola Mayor Jennifer Cruz said that 6 barangays were affected by the disease.
