“I raised Lapulapu to the level and dignity of a true warrior. And he was Tausug. The settlement is Tausug,” said the President in a speech at Camp Siongco in Maguindanao on Tuesday.

“Itong mga pilosopo, they are contesting Lapulapu. Sabi ko andiyan na ‘yan, he killed the first invader of our country. I am very proud of him, talagang napagyayabang ko,” he added.

It can be recalled that Senator Bong Go apologized after saying that Lapulapu came from Mindanao.

Go said the story that Lapulapu was a Tausug from Mindanao came from Abraham Ibarani-Idjirani, a Sultanate of Sulu spokesperson.

Meanwhile, the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) clarified that there is not enough evidence to support the claim that Lapulapu is a Tausug.

According to NHCP chairperson Rene Escalante, Lapulapu’s account only states that he is a Mactan chieftain and there is no information about where he was born and other details on his life.

Therefore, there is not enough evidence to tell whether he is Tausug or not.
