Robredo to Biden: “Ensure the safety of all Asians and minority groups”
Vice President Leni Robredo expressed her concern about the series of hate crimes against Asians in the United States amid the coronavirus pandemic.
In a statement on Monday, April 5, VP Robredo also said she was confident that the new US administration would take action to ensure the safety of Filipinos, Asians, and other minorities.
“At a time when the world should come together in solidarity against the greater threat of the pandemic, Asians, some of them Filipinos, have been singled out as targets of rage and racial hatred. This has contributed to a climate of growing fear in an atmosphere already made volatile by COVID-19,” she said.
“Hatred has no place in any society that wishes to heal,” she noted.
“I am hopeful that the United States government, under the leadership of President Joseph R. Biden Jr., will ensure the safety of all Asians and minority groups, even as it works to address the deeper issues of racism and racial violence,” she added.
Crime against Asians has reportedly increased in various parts of the US since the COVID-19 pandemic began.
Activists have linked this spate of crimes to former US President Donald Trump’s denunciation of COVID-19 as a “Chinese virus.”
