Private funds were used in VCO distribution to hospitals, according to Nograles.
Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles said that “private funds” were used in the distribution of virgin coconut oil (VCO) to hospitals attending to COVID-positive patients.
On Thursday, Nograles explained that “private funds” were tapped to procure the VCO supplies which he had given away to some hospitals in the National Capital Region (NCR).
Nograles had advocated the use of VCO as potential safe treatment for COVID-19.

A statement from Nograles’ office stated that the distribution of VCO was a personal initiative and not an official IATF undertaking.
Last Wednesday, Nograles distributed free VCO supplies to Novaliches General Hospital in Quezon City and SDS Medical Center in Marikina. Earlier, VCO supplies were given away to San Lorenzo Ruiz Women’s Hospital, Caloocan City Medical Center, and Ospital ng Malabon.
Nograles then explained that he opted to distribute free VCO supplies after consulting the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), doctors, and experts who said VCO “could have possible benefits for COVID-19 patients with mild symptoms”.
“At this point, we should be doing everything we can to help those who have contracted COVID-19. If there are possible treatments out there backed up by science, and trying these treatments have little or no risk involved, subukan natin,” Nograles said.

Earlier, the Department of Science and Technology conducted clinical studies on VCO as possible COVID-19 treatment for some COVID-positive patients with mild coronavirus symptoms.
Initial results showed VCO can help prevent COVID-19 systems from worsening. The department also maintained that more studies must be conducted in order to determine the efficacy of the VCO in order to help patients with comorbidities.
