Health Secretary Francisco Duque III on Friday admitted that the Philippine government didn’t expect a steep spike in COVID-19 cases.
Duque admitted that the Philippine government didn’t expect the COVID-19 cases to increase the way they had been doing over the past several days after some restrictions were eased in order to kickstart the economy.
According to a report on GMA Network’s “Saksi”, Duque said that the Philippines needed to make adjustments after the restrictions were eased and the number of COVID-19 cases steeply increased.

“Hindi naman natin alam na papalo ng ganito kataas. So we have to make the adjustments. Mas maraming nagkakahawaan. Ngayon na tumaas. O, para muna tayo. Ganu’n talaga, e. We have to bounce. Parang cha-cha-cha ka e. ‘Di ba, ‘di ba? One step back, two steps forward,” Duque said.
OCTA Research had warned that new coronavirus cases could reach 20,000 in a day in April after the uptick in the number of new coronavirus infections reported daily over the past few weeks.
The Department of Health on Friday reported a total of 73,264 active cases in the Philippines. Of this, 93.9% were mild, 3.3% were asymptomatic, 1.1% were severe, and 1% were in critical condition.
