Bloomberg reported that Google was exploring its own alternative to Apple’s anti-tracking features to be introduced in Apple’s iOS 14 update.

Google was in early internal talks on how it could limit cross-app tracking and data collection on its operating system, trying to balance its interests as an advertising company and users asking for more privacy.

Bloomberg speculated that Google’s solution wouldn’t be as strict as Apple’s solution.

We’re always looking for ways to work with developers to raise the bar on privacy while enabling a healthy, ad-supported app ecosystem,” a Google spokesperson said in a statement.

In Apple’s forthcoming iOS 14.5 update, iPhone users would see a popup when an app wanted to use Apple’s ad ID for targeted advertising, allowing them to hinder apps from gaining data.

While Google already decided to forgo Apple’s cross-app tracking technology on iOS going forward, Facebook was actively campaigning against the incoming changes as the company claimed that it would hurt small businesses.

More privacy protection was an issue dividing the industry and it remained to be seen how far Google can go on its mobile operating system without calling up anti-trust agencies.

If Google’s foray into privacy seemed familiar to you, it’s because it partially was.
