NTC: Gov’t Invites Telcos To Attend Bi-Monthly Meetings On Internet Speed Boost

The Philippine government invited telcos to attend bi-monthly meetings on internet speed boost, according to NTC.

The National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) said that the major telcos in the Philippines had been invited to attend bi-monthly meetings with the government starting February 2021 in an effort to boost the internet speed in the country.

Telcos To Attend Bi-Monthly Meetings

NTC on Sunday explained bared some of the areas that will be explored in the meetings between the country’s telecommunications companies and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

In a report on Inquirer, the commission looked to capitalize on the recent internet speed improvement in the country.

This, after Ookla Speedtest reported that the Philippines had moved 14 spots up in the “mobile internet” category in their December global index, good for 96th place with an average speed of 22.50 Mbps.

In a statement, NTC said that the commission invited Smart and Globe to its first bi-monthly meeting with the Department of Information and Communications Technology on the first week of February in order to help ensure that the telecommunications companies’ plans for improvement and expansion in 2021 were completed in time.

In the meeting, telcos are expected to brief the NTC on the status of their network roll-outs and current problems encountered. The NTC aims to determine how government can help address said issues, particularly ‘red tape’ challenges,” NTC said.

To recall, the NTC recently directed telecommunications companies to submit their rollout plans for this year in order to give the agency an outlook of how much internet speeds would improve in the Philippines.

While the Philippines also improved in the “fixed broadband” category, getting up three spots for the 100th ranking with 31.44 Mbps, the country still lagged behind its Southeast Asian neighbors like Laos, Vietnam, and Thailand.

Inquirer also reported that the meetings would also tackle how to improve and sustain internet speed status in the Philippines, based on Ookla’s Speedtest index.
