US Vice President Mike Pence Gets COVID-19 Vaccine

US Vice President Mike Pence received COVID-19 vaccine.

US Vice President Mike Pence on Friday had received a COVID-19 vaccine live on television in a public display that was designed to boost national confidence in the COVID-19 vaccine.

According to Pence, building confidence in the COVID-19 vaccine was what brought them there on Friday morning, adding that he didn’t feel a thing after being vaccinated.

Pence, his wife Karen Pence, and Surgeon General Jerome Adams were all given the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer and BioNTech in the annex to the White House.

Signalling the importance given to the said event, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director Robert Redfield and top infectious disease official Dr. Anthony Fauci were also present in the room.

However, US President Donald Trump wasn’t present in the said room.

In a report on Manila Bulletin, the Republican had sent mixed messages about the seriousness of coronavirus disease throughout the crisis, even as the United States death toll topped 300,000 this month.

However, he had been keen to take credit for the historic speed of COVID-19 vaccine development.

Early Friday, US President Donald Trump tweeted that a second COVID-19, made by Moderna, had been “overwhelmingly approved” and the distribution would “start immediately”.

Trump’s tweet sparked confusion as the vaccine experts panel last Thursday had recommended an emergency use authorization (EUA) for COVID-19 vaccine from Moderna.

As per the report, the Food and Drug Administration in the United States (US FDA) wasn’t expected to give the approval allowing distribution until later Friday.

Trump had made clear that he wasn’t planning to take the COVID-19 vaccine imminently, citing the belief that his recovery from a “brief but severe” bout of COVID-19 had given him an immunity.

He will receive the vaccine as soon as his medical team determines it’s best. But his priority is frontline workers, those in long-term care facilities,” White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi — the top Democrat in Congress — and Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell were given the COVID-19 vaccine on Friday.
