South Korea Eradicates 2.7 Million Birds To Stop A Bird Flu Outbreak
SOUTH KOREA ERADICATES 2.7 MILLION BIRDS – After dealing with the coronavirus pandemic, the South Korean government drew concerns regarding a rise in bird flu cases among local farms.
As such, local authorities were ordered to cull around 2.7 million birds to prevent another outbreak. According to an article from Inquirer, 360,000 ducks, 1.5 million chickens, and 885,000 quails were killed since November 28.
Initially, South Korea reported its first case of bird flu in Jeongeup located 290 kilometers south of Seoul. Currently, South Korea has confirmed five cases of the highly pathogenic bird flu or avian influenza.
As per the article, authorities are investigating two suspected cases from different regions. One was reported at Gyeonggi Province, which surrounds Seoul, and South Jeolla Province.
To prevent the spread of the pathogenic avian flu, authorities cull birds that are within a 3-kilometer radius of infected farms. Furthermore, birds at farms with suspected cases are also slaughtered.
The highly pathogenic avian fl is contagious and can cause severe illness and even death in poultry. With the large amount of reliance to poultry and agriculture, an outbreak could severely affect South Korea’s livestock industry.
